Li ion rechargeable batteries are very famous now a days and almost every person who use electronic devices at home or work use these batteries on daily basis. But the main question comes in our mind is why now a days our important devices like laptops, cellphones, digital cameras etc use rechargeable li-ion batteries? The answer is simple because the li-ion batteries have high energy capacity due to which they last longer and also they are small in size and weight as compare to NIMH and NICD batteries. Due to which now a days li-ion batteries become ideal for portable devices.

Another advantage of the li-ion battery is that they contain 3.6 to 3.7 volt per cell as compare to NIMH and NICD batteries which contains 1.2V per cell. And most of the devices runs with only a single cell for example cell phone and most digital cameras use 3.6 volt li ion battery.

These batteries also have no memory effect due to which they can be charged any time or frequently. These batteries can be charged on higher current (always see the manufacturer's instructions before charging at higher current) due to which they become full charged in 1 or 2 hours.

These batteries also have low self discharge rate approx 5% per month which is much better as compare to other batteries which discharge 20% to 30% per month. Li ion battery also contains a safety circuit with them which monitor the internal cells and save them from overcharge, over discharge and over heat.

Li ion battery care tips:

By following these tips you can care your li ion batteries and make their life long.

  1. Excessive heat is harmful for the li ion battery life therefore always kept them below 40 degree centigrade.
  2. Do not leave them in direct sunlight or in car.
  3. Always keep them at cool and dry places.
  4. Do not deep discharge the battery for example do not completely use / dischage the battery. Deep discharge cycles reduces the battery capacity very much. Always charge the batteries when around 50%, 40% or 30% capacity is left. Higher battery capacity at the time of charge shorten the charging cycle due to which the battery not lose its capacity early which increases the battery life.
  5. Do not keep the battery in devices if you dont want to use them for a long period of time, in this situation always extract the battery from the device and store them in a dry and cool place. with temperature between 0 degree to 40 degree centigrade.
  6. Keep the battery at 40% charge level when storing for a long period of time.
  7. If you have stored your battery for a long period of time, always check the battery after every six months, charge them and if possible use them and again store at 40% charge level.
